Thank you for your interest in donating objects or documents to the Newseum. The generous support shown to the museum through donations helps to enrich our collection.

What We Collect

The Newseum collects news periodicals, news photographs, journalistic equipment, personal effects from well-known journalists and news artifacts related to historic events.

Items of interest include telegraphs; cameras — especially those used by noteworthy photojournalists or used to shoot historic photographs or news footage; typewriters, notebooks, computers, pens, eyeglasses and articles of clothing used by journalists; signs and promotional items used to advertise newspapers, news magazines, radio and TV stations; and press releases, press passes, scripts and transcripts related to important news events and protests.

How to Donate Artifacts and Documents

The Newseum receives many donation proposals. Please be aware that it takes time to process each request. A curator will consider your proposal and will contact you for additional information. Please be prepared to provide as much information as possible about your donation. Photographs and inventories are extremely helpful. Once all information is received, the Collections Planning Committee will consider the donation.

The committee reviews and approves artifact donation proposals according to the following criteria:

  • The physical condition of the item(s) must be acceptable for potential exhibit use.
  • The Newseum must be able to properly store and provide long-term care for the item(s).
  • The donation must be an unrestricted, permanent transfer of ownership. Under special circumstances, a loan to the Newseum may be considered.

The committee meets quarterly in the months of December, March, June and September. If your donation is approved by the committee, a curator will contact you regarding the next steps. If you have questions, concerns or issues, or wish to check on the status of your donation, please contact us.
